Fiji’s Yeshnil Karan, a talented middle-distance runner, has recently received an Australian sports scholarship from the Fiji National Sports Commission after his impressive performance at the UniSport Australia Nationals Athletics Championship. Karan shattered a long-standing national record in the 10,000 meters, finishing the race in 30 minutes and 19.92 seconds—a remarkable achievement that surpassed the previous record of 31 minutes and 32 seconds held since 1971 by Usaia Sotutu.
This national record caps off a series of outstanding performances in Karan’s career. The Tavua native has represented Fiji on numerous international platforms, including the Commonwealth Games and Pacific Games, where he has accumulated an impressive collection of medals. Notably, at the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Karan clinched three gold medals in the 10,000 meters, 5000 meters, and 3000 meters events, alongside gold and bronze medals at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games.
Karan’s explosive growth in the sport, exemplified by his record-breaking performance which was only his second-ever 10,000m race, underscores his tremendous potential in athletics. His achievements serve as a source of inspiration for young athletes in Fiji, demonstrating that dedication and strong performances can achieve remarkable milestones and contribute positively to the future of Fijian athletics.
As Karan embarks on this new chapter with his scholarship, he is hoped to further hone his skills and become a formidable presence in international athletics, potentially paving the way for future Fijian athletes to reach new heights. His journey is not only a personal triumph but also a testimony to the power of perseverance in sports.
