Fiji’s Rising Star: Aisea Buliruarua’s Musical Journey

Spread the love

As the music industry in Fiji aims for international recognition, local artists, both young and old, are embracing collaboration while maintaining a competitive spirit.

Aisea Buliruarua, a 22-year-old from Lomaiviti and a former member of the group Paradise Roots, is on a personal journey to explore his potential. He believes in the advice he has received to trust himself, even when facing challenges alone.

“Since joining the music scene, my family and seasoned musicians have encouraged me to believe in my abilities,” Buliruarua explains.

His love for music began early, as he consistently attended family gatherings, anticipating live bands. “I always wanted to perform with a band one day,” he shares. This dream materialized when he joined Paradise Roots, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

An audition suggested by a friend, Benjamin Amori, led him to the group’s manager, Setareki Baleirara, who offered him the chance to display his musical talent.

Buliruarua’s passion also emerged during Sunday school, where he learned to play the guitar and ukulele at the age of 14. His musical journey was influenced by his family, known for their musical background.

Interestingly, he has a familial connection to the Voqa ni Delai Dokidoki band, which gained fame in the early 2000s with hits like “Au mai Vakila” and “Sereki na Rarawa.”

The band won the Best Performer Award in 1981, with Temo Soko Lote recognized as Best Composer the following year. Buliruarua recalls watching and learning from them, creating a bond that helped him discover his musical voice.

“I grew up listening to Dokidoki, but my experience was unique. I observed their songwriting process and performed with them at family events. That solidified my desire to reach similar heights in music,” he states.

With the internet now a significant player in the music industry, offering new platforms for musicians, Buliruarua envisions growth for Fijian music. “I hope to see more opportunities arise for me to showcase my talent,” he concludes.
