Vaimoe Koroi, a dedicated 19-year-old hooker from Vanuabalavu in Lau, is pursuing his lifelong dream of representing the Fiji under-20 rugby team. Having played rugby in Australia for several years, Koroi joined the SportsWorld Fiji U20 camp last month, eager to secure a place in the squad for the upcoming Super Rugby U20 competition, scheduled for March 15-22.

Koroi expressed that training with his teammates has been both challenging and rewarding, saying, “The intensity, the heat, and the pace are on another level. It has pushed me to work harder, and hopefully I’ll go back to Australia stronger than when I arrived.” His commitment to improving his skills showcases the dedication he has towards his rugby career.

He was selected for the squad by head coach Senirusi Seruvakula and is one of four players from Brisbane representing the team. Drawing inspiration from watching Fijian teams like the 7s, 15s, and particularly the Drua, Koroi has always aimed to don the Fijian jersey. “I’m grateful for this opportunity,” he said, highlighting the significance of representing his homeland.

Looking towards his future, Koroi has set even more ambitious goals. “I want to push for a spot in the Drua or the Queensland Reds and, one day, the Flying Fijians or even the Wallabies,” he remarked. This drive reflects his determination to not only succeed at the U20 level but to make a lasting impact in higher tiers of rugby.

Koroi also admires Tevita Ikanivere, captain of Fijian Drua, who plays in the same position, as a role model for his aspirations. His journey emphasizes the strength of the Fijian rugby spirit and the commitment required to excel on the world stage, providing hope for aspiring athletes that with dedication and hard work, dreams can become reality.
