Atunaisa Ratuqalovi, a 17-year-old student from Ratu Kadavulevu School, is making headlines as a key member of the Fiji National Rugby League Under 18 camp. His aspirations have soared as he represents the Junior Bati in their upcoming match against Tonga this Saturday. Ratuqalovi is not only passionate about rugby but also sees the sport as a pathway to inspire future generations, looking up to NRL star Kalyn Ponga for motivation.
“I watch a lot of his games; it looks good when he sets up the team and does a lot of work on the field. Now that we are part of the Junior Fiji Bati’s, we want to set a benchmark for our little brothers who will follow in our path later,” Ratuqalovi expressed. He believes that their journey is about more than just individual success; it also includes cultivating a strong foundation for younger players to build upon.
The Junior Bati has faced rigorous training in the lead-up to their match at Churchill Park in Lautoka, but the experience has also fostered a close-knit brotherhood among the players. “At the start, we didn’t really get along well, but as days went by, we started showing appreciation and love for each other. Now I don’t think this bond can be broken,” he shared. Ratuqalovi adds that for young boys who might feel education isn’t their strength, pursuing sports can also offer fulfilling opportunities.
The match against Tonga kicks off at 10 AM as part of a significant event that includes the Kaiviti Silktails versus West Tigers game, which will be broadcast live on FBC Sports. Coach Wise Kativerata’s focus on developing young talent is reflected throughout the team, emphasizing discipline and personal growth alongside athletic development, which is echoed in Ratuqalovi’s story.
Similar narratives have emerged in recent articles regarding the Junior Bati squad, highlighting coach Kativerata’s commitment to nurturing young talents, many of whom have faced personal challenges before coming together as a team. This dedication reflects a broader strategy to promote grassroots development in Fiji’s rugby scene, ensuring these young athletes have opportunities for success both on and off the field.
The anticipation surrounding the match not only excites fans but signifies hope for the future of rugby in Fiji, showcasing the resilience and potential of its youth. As these players embark on their journey, they embody the aspirations of a generation eager to pave the way for themselves and those who will follow.
