Fiji’s Rising Drug Challenge: Are We Ready to Combat the Surge?

International drug networks are increasingly exploiting Fiji’s strategic position as a transit point for synthetic drugs, particularly methamphetamine, according to Acting Police Commissioner Aporosa Lutunauga. Recent police operations have intercepted 4.9 kilograms of methamphetamine valued at approximately $2.4 million, confirming that these drugs are trafficked rather than produced locally.

Mr. Lutunauga emphasized the ongoing need for enhanced surveillance and solid evidence to disrupt and dismantle these drug operations effectively. “In some cases, we have already achieved this,” he stated, highlighting the importance of maintaining vigilance at Fiji’s borders. The police are collaborating closely with development partners and various sectors of society, including municipalities, churches, and NGOs, to adopt a comprehensive approach to combat drug-related crimes.

In recent developments, Fiji’s policing efforts have shown a 37 percent increase in drug raids, signaling a proactive stance against drug trafficking and production.
