Fiji’s Consumer Council has intensified its warnings over rental car services as reports of unethical practices among some operators have surged. Since 2020, the council has documented 163 complaints resulting in over $97,000 in losses for consumers, a trend that has become increasingly concerning.
Chief Executive Seema Shandil voiced her alarm over the delay in bond refunds and the exploitation of consumer trust by certain rental companies. Many operators are allegedly withholding bond returns indefinitely by citing pending traffic fines, which has left customers financially stranded for extended periods.
Shandil highlighted other troubling behaviors, including reports of verbal abuse and evasiveness from rental company staff, and a widespread refusal to provide receipts or written agreements. This lack of documentation can leave consumers vulnerable and unable to challenge unexpected charges or terms.
In one cited incident, a consumer faced significant inconvenience when a rented vehicle broke down, only to be instructed to pay for repairs upfront, with promises of reimbursement that never materialized despite the submission of receipts.
“The treatment that consumers are enduring is entirely unacceptable,” Shandil stated, emphasizing the need for stronger enforcement to prevent these practices. She criticized the lack of accountability in vehicle maintenance as part of a broader issue within the industry.
To combat these injustices, the Consumer Council plans to collaborate closely with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Rental Car Association to implement stricter measures against repeat offenders. Shandil urged consumers to be vigilant when renting vehicles, advising them to demand proper documentation, avoid informal cash transactions, and ensure the legitimacy of the renting company.
In light of these challenges, there is a beacon of hope as the efforts from the Consumer Council and regulatory authorities may lead to a safer and more reliable rental car market. With ongoing focus on consumer rights and proper practices, there is potential for a more equitable experience for all renters in Fiji, ultimately fostering a more trustworthy environment. As these partnerships strengthen, consumers can look forward to improvements that enhance their traveling experiences, ensuring they enjoy their time without the undue stress of unethical practices.
