Tevita Rokovereni and Lavenia Racaca, Fiji’s leading referees, are being evaluated for potential full-time contracts following their participation in the HSBC SVN Series in Canada. James Bolabiu, the High-Performance referees manager of the Fiji Rugby Union, announced this development, marking a significant step forward in their officiating careers. This proposed contract would be a first for both referees.
Bolabiu emphasized the importance of this next step, noting the high demand for their services as they manage training sessions and warm-up matches. Rokovereni’s recent historic milestone, where he officiated the Cup final between South Africa and Argentina at the Vancouver tournament, underscores the growth of Fijian refereeing. His accomplishment is particularly significant as he is only the second Fijian to reach this level in 16 years, with Bolabiu being the last in 2009.
Acknowledging the dedication reflected in Rokovereni’s progression, Bolabiu pointed to the success of the referee development program, which has been in place for ten months. The program includes around 30 referees, with an impressive 40% of them being female. This initiative not only aims to elevate the standards of officiating but also serves to inspire future generations of rugby talent in Fiji.
The recent involvement of six referees, including two women, at the Oceania 7s in the Solomon Islands further showcases the program’s impact, as it represented the largest delegation from a Pacific Islands country.
The focused effort on developing skilled referees is a positive sign for the future of rugby in Fiji. It positions local referees for greater recognition and opportunities internationally. With backing from the Fiji Rugby Union and the Fiji Rugby Referees Association, the outlook for both established and aspiring referees looks promising, fostering hope and inspiration within the sports community as Fijian officiating gains international respect.
