The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) is set to hold its annual “Reclaim The Night” march in Suva next Saturday, creating a platform for women to assert their right to reclaim public spaces. This event, which will take place on March 8, 2025, coincides with International Women’s Day, aims to gather participants in a show of solidarity against violence toward women, girls, and children.
The FWCC noted that this event began in 1987 with merely 30 participants but has since become a vital part of efforts to eliminate violence and discrimination faced by women. This year, the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Roads Authority have approved the march with certain stipulations, including a cap of 800 participants and restrictions against carrying political banners or slogans, particularly those referencing Palestine, Israel, Kanaky, and West Papua.
This event will commence at the Suva Flea Market at 7pm, serving as a significant reminder that the community continues to advocate for the rights and safety of women, girls, and children. The importance of such gatherings is underscored by prior events, where similar marches have drawn attention to broader human rights issues in Fiji.
Activist Shamima Ali has previously highlighted the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and the challenges posed by governmental constraints on expression. Past events, such as those celebrating International Human Rights Day, have seen strong community support, revealing a desire for change and a unified stance against oppression.
It is a hopeful time for activists and communities alike as they come together to foster awareness and initiate discussions around critical social issues, showcasing a collective determination to ensure that every individual’s rights are respected.
This upcoming march reflects a commitment to community engagement and empowerment, paving the way for continued campaigns advocating for justice and equality in Fiji and beyond.
