Unity Fiji has launched an online survey aimed at gathering public input on the contentious 2013 Constitution. The survey includes questions about participants’ willingness to support legal challenges against the constitution’s legitimacy, reflecting widespread concerns about the daunting process of amending it, which requires overwhelming consent from both Members of Parliament and voters.

This initiative seeks to understand the public’s perspective on the constitution and evaluates actionable paths to rectify what many believe to be a misalignment with the people’s will. Among the discussed strategies is the potential for a legal challenge in court, acknowledging the challenges tied to constitutional amendments.

The survey addresses key issues, including public involvement in the constitution’s original drafting, perceptions of its legitimacy, and the feasibility of gathering enough support for amendments to pass.

Unity Fiji’s efforts, led by Savenaca Narube, underscore a concerted push to tackle the perceived deficiencies of the 2013 Constitution. Narube has critiqued the current government’s inaction regarding constitutional review, mirroring sentiments of frustration shared by both opposition parties and the general populace regarding governance.

This development takes place alongside a broader movement advocating for constitutional reform in Fiji. The establishment of a Constitution Review Commission highlights the government’s recognition of public discontent and the urgent need for reform. This process offers a promising opportunity for various stakeholders to come together in pursuit of a legal framework that is more inclusive and truly representative of the diverse voices within Fijian society.

With proactive engagement and collaboration, Fiji stands poised for meaningful reforms that could enhance democratic governance and accountability, aligned with the aspirations of its citizens for a more equitable legal system.
