Fiji is enhancing its bus e-ticketing system to modernize public transport and streamline commuter experiences, according to IT professional Mohammed Nafeez. The initiative aims to integrate the e-ticketing system with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) to boost tax compliance and minimize revenue loss.

Nafeez highlighted several planned upgrades to the system, including new electronic payment methods, issuance of electronic receipts, and improved transaction processing. The expansion of e-ticketing will cover taxis, minibuses, and hire vehicles, creating a uniform fare collection approach across the transport industry. The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) will further enhance system effectiveness and security.

Key features of the upgraded system will include:

– Support for mobile payment applications, allowing commuters to pay using their smartphones alongside traditional bus cards.
– Electronic tracking of transactions stored on commuter bus cards, moving away from physical receipts to reduce paper waste.
– Advanced fraud detection and security measures to protect user accounts.
– Real-time fare deduction and balance checks through a mobile app, fostering transparency in financial management.
– Automated fare calculations based on distances traveled, leading to a fairer pricing structure.
– A widespread educational campaign to inform the public about the new system and mandatory training for bus operators to ensure efficient utilization of the upgraded infrastructure.

This overhaul aims to address shortcomings in the current public transport framework and significantly improve user experience. The positive trajectory of this plan reflects a governmental commitment toward a more efficient and modernized public transportation system, benefiting all citizens in Fiji.
