Poor management practices in workplaces are increasingly identified as a significant factor contributing to declining productivity and escalating tension between employers and employees in the country. The Ministry of Employment has observed that complaints from employers regarding workers potentially misusing sick and annual leave cannot be attributed solely to the actions of the employees, suggesting instead that these issues stem from persistent management failures.

Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh emphasized that this concern has been raised by employers in multiple forums, underlining the critical gaps in effective supervision and fair treatment of workers. While some employers claim that these issues have compelled them to resort to hiring foreign labor, the government maintains that the fundamental challenge lies in the management of people within the workforce.

Singh pointed out that the roles of supervisors, managers, and human resource personnel are pivotal in shaping an organization’s culture, productivity, and discipline. He acknowledged that the government has implemented measures to enhance the attractiveness of employment for local workers, such as raising the minimum wage. However, he cautioned that increasing wages alone would not rectify deep-rooted management issues.

Moreover, Minister Singh called on employers to fulfill their obligations to their employees by ensuring fair treatment and payment of all employee benefits, stressing that this is crucial for maintaining a dedicated local workforce. He also highlighted the importance of mutual responsibility, reminding workers that their rights come alongside corresponding responsibilities to meet their work obligations.

In addition, the Minister urged respect for foreign workers, pointing out that all workers in Fiji, regardless of their nationality, are afforded equal protection under the law. This call for inclusiveness was echoed by Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation CEO Edward Bernard, who commented that while only a minority of businesses infringe on workers’ rights, it is imperative that these abuses are addressed swiftly and effectively.

This comprehensive approach, focusing on both management practices and worker accountability, seeks to create a more harmonious and productive working environment, benefiting employees and employers alike.
