Beyond the headline

During the opening of Parliament in Suva, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu underscored the urgent need for responsible social media use, emphasizing its profound impact on democracy and political dialogue in Fiji. He expressed deep concerns about the negative consequences of online hostility, trolling, and misinformation in shaping public perception and civic engagement.

In his address, Ratu Naiqama called on both individuals and social media platforms to cultivate a more respectful and constructive online atmosphere. He urged citizens to take personal responsibility for their online interactions, recognizing that fostering a culture of respect is crucial for encouraging healthy public discourse.

The President’s remarks come amid increasing public anxiety regarding online discourse, particularly highlighted by the recent death of social influencer Esala Seru Yalewamama. This tragedy has sparked heightened scrutiny of harmful online spaces, such as the infamous ‘ChatFiji’ Facebook forum, with calls for its closure due to its history of promoting trolling and defamatory behavior.

In response to these issues, Ratu Naiqama advocated for a united effort to combat hate speech and misinformation. He pointed out that while social media possesses the potential to positively influence public opinion, its misuse threatens the fabric of civic engagement and democratic integrity. Promoting civility and respect online, he stated, is essential to creating an environment where all citizens can engage without fear of harassment or backlash.

This initiative is aligned with broader calls for accountability in managing online public forums. Legal experts and advocates, including Jon Apted and members of the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, have echoed the need for enhanced public education on responsible online conduct and increased support for organizations dedicated to combating online bullying and harassment.

The President’s message represents a hopeful direction toward fostering a more informed and respectful political environment, encouraging active and responsible citizen participation in democracy. The effort to develop a safer online community bodes well for reducing divisive rhetoric and enhancing meaningful engagement in national issues.
