A group of Opposition Members of Parliament, including Jone Usamate, Alvick Maharaj, Praveen Bala, Semi Koroilavesau, and Virendra Lal, is calling on the government to cease blaming the previous FijiFirst administration and instead focus on delivering tangible results for the people of Fiji. They argue that the current administration is relying too heavily on accusations against its predecessor instead of fulfilling its electoral promises.

Maharaj specifically rebutted claims regarding ongoing issues with the Rewa Dairy ownership transition and the performance of Provincial Councils, asserting that these challenges are longstanding and that councils operate independently from the central government. This appeal follows the revelation in Parliament about significant financial losses due to unrecovered loans from Provincial Councils over the years.

These sentiments echo earlier criticisms voiced by Maharaj regarding the governing People’s Alliance Party (PAP), where he accused them of focusing more on political vengeance than on governance. He stressed that progress takes time and called for collaboration between the government and the opposition to address pressing national concerns.

Furthermore, Usamate has criticized Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica for allegedly distracting attention from the government’s failures, including ongoing infrastructure issues and inadequate public services. He echoed calls for more effective governance and transparency while advocating for a political environment that prioritizes the citizens’ needs over partisan conflicts.

The discussion surrounding accountability and results-driven governance remains crucial as Fiji navigates its political landscape. The hope lies in the possibility that if both sides engage in constructive dialogue, it could lead to a more united and effective government, ultimately enhancing the wellbeing of all Fijians. By fostering collaborative efforts, there exists potential for meaningful reforms that resonate with the aspirations and needs of the populace.
