Former Director of Public Prosecutions Aca Rayawa has expressed concerns regarding former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, suggesting that his legal troubles are behind the decisions made by both Sayed-Khaiyum and former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to step away from their electoral commitments following the 2022 General Elections. Rayawa’s critique surfaced after Sayed-Khaiyum commented on the government’s plans for amending the 2013 Constitution, prompting Rayawa to remind the public of historical events, including Bainimarama’s past imprisonment, which occurred under Sayed-Khaiyum’s legal counsel.

Rayawa accused Sayed-Khaiyum and Bainimarama of neglecting their duties to the voters, stating, “You and Bainimarama ran for cover,” and stressing that their abandonment resulted in a realignment of support towards Sitiveni Rabuka and the Coalition Government. This shift is indicative of the evolving political landscape in Fiji, demonstrating the electorate’s demand for accountability.

Further amplifying these sentiments, Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavu highlighted Sayed-Khaiyum’s significant influence over Bainimarama’s rule, pointing out how the sidelining of senior advisers contributed to governance errors. This dialogue marks a pivotal moment, emphasizing the necessity for accountability and collaborative decision-making within the Fijian political system.

As Fiji assesses its political dynamics, this internal critique signals a potential for renewal. There is a growing aspiration among various political factions to move away from previous practices, aiming for a more inclusive and representative democratic process. The ongoing discussions about leadership and collaboration offer a glimmer of hope for an accountable government that genuinely addresses the needs and voices of the Fijian populace.
