Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has criticized the Fijian Government’s recent actions, accusing it of desperation in its approach to constitutional amendments. Usamate described the government’s offer to lower the threshold for such changes while allegedly attempting to entice fellow MPs with inducements as a clear sign of a lack of genuine leadership.

In a statement to FijiLive, Usamate highlighted the comments made by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, labeling them as a blatant attempt to divert attention from the government’s failures. According to Usamate, these measures, including the alleged bribery tactics, not only undermine the principles of transparency and integrity but insult every Fijian citizen.

Usamate noted that two opposition MPs have already succumbed to such inducements, prompting questions about what rewards they might receive in exchange for their compliance. He remarked, “The Prime Minister himself has let down Fijians by undermining their voices through sneaky and underhand tricks.”

The current political climate echoes similar recent accusations from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, who also raised concerns about government tactics that resemble bribery. Seruiratu emphasized the importance of real discussions and transparency in legislative matters, aligning with Usamate’s commitment to protect the integrity of the Constitution.

Both Usamate and Seruiratu’s stances underline a broader call for accountability and the strengthening of democratic practices in Fiji. They argue that leadership should focus on fostering trust and engaging in respectful dialogue with the public, rather than resorting to coercive methods.

This situation reflects the growing tensions within Fijian politics as the opposition remains vigilant against what they describe as deceptive tactics. Amidst the disputes, there is a hopeful prospect that ongoing dialogue could pave the way for meaningful reforms, ensuring that the legislative process is genuinely reflective of the will of the Fijian people. Such engagements may ultimately enhance democratic values and encourage more inclusive governance.
