The comprehensive review of Fiji’s Police Act, which dates back to 1965, has officially begun as the Ministry of Policing partners with the Fiji Police Force and the Office of the Solicitor-General. This initiative aims to modernize the legislative framework governing police operations, ensuring that it aligns with contemporary standards and respects the rights of all Fijians.
Launched in May 2025, the review has seen high-level consultations among key stakeholders, including the Minister for Policing and the Police Commissioner. Early discussions have set the stage for reform, focusing on how to reconfigure police authority within constitutional and human rights parameters.
A legal consultant has been enlisted to guide the technical aspects of the reform, and discussions have also engaged various civil society groups, including the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission and organizations advocating for women’s and disability rights. Five key themes have emerged from these consultations, focusing on areas such as defining police authority, improving law enforcement practices through modern technology, protecting whistleblowers, establishing community policing models, and enhancing police training with a focus on ethics and sensitivity.
To encourage public participation, an online submission portal will soon launch, allowing citizens to provide their recommendations on the evolution of policing laws. Following this, a Consultation Paper and a draft Police Bill will be unveiled in August 2025, supported by nationwide public meetings designed to gather community input.
The Ministry emphasizes that public involvement is essential to developing laws that are just, inclusive, and reflective of modern social realities. This commitment to reform and community engagement signals a hopeful future for policing in Fiji, aiming to bolster trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Such proactive measures may lead to a more responsive, accountable police force, promoting greater public safety and confidence in law enforcement as the country adapts to contemporary challenges. By prioritizing collaboration and transparency, these reforms promise to create a safer and more secure environment for all citizens.
