A thorough review of the Police Act of 1965 is currently in progress in Fiji, marking a decisive step towards modernizing the country’s policing framework. The Ministry of Policing, in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and the Office of the Solicitor-General, is spearheading this initiative, which aims to align law enforcement practices with contemporary societal expectations and rights.

To ensure the efficacy of this reform, a legal consultant has been engaged, and a series of consultations has already taken place with key government and law enforcement figures, including the Minister for Policing and the Commissioner of Police. Discussions are centered around key issues such as clearly defining police powers, balancing them against constitutional rights, and enhancing police practices with advancements in technology.

Notable areas of focus include establishing a national framework for community policing, bolstering legal protections for informers and whistleblowers, and fostering training that emphasizes professionalism and sensitivity within the Fiji Police Force. The review process will also invite public participation through an online submission portal, enabling Fijians to voice their opinions on the potential improvements to the Police Act.

By early August, the reform team plans to release a Consultation Paper outlining significant policy issues alongside a draft Police Bill that encapsulates proposed legislative reforms. Such proactive measures signal a hopeful trajectory for policing in Fiji, aiming to enhance community trust and ensure that policing strategies meet the needs of all citizens.

Moreover, this review aligns with previous initiatives that focus on modernizing policing methodologies, reflecting an evolving approach to public safety that prioritizes transparency and community engagement. These measures aspire to create a more responsive and accountable police force, ultimately contributing to a safer environment across Fiji.
