Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka engaged with the Fijian community in Santa Rosa, California, during a four-hour “talanoa” session that allowed for an in-depth dialogue on important national issues and the situation of Fijians living abroad. This meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of the diaspora and acknowledging their significant contributions to Fiji’s economy through remittances.
During the session, concerns were raised regarding the deportation of Fijians in the U.S. The Prime Minister conveyed the importance of adhering to U.S. immigration laws while advocating for understanding toward Fijians who have overstayed but have not committed other offenses. He expressed hope for a compassionate approach that would enable such individuals to regularize their residency status.
The discussions also touched on various important subjects, including investment prospects, membership in the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), banking services, land development opportunities, and the role of consular assistance. Rabuka expressed gratitude to the diaspora attendees for their candid conversations and assured them that their inputs would be taken into account in upcoming policy formulations.
