Fiji’s path to progress hinges on the inclusion of women in decision-making roles, as emphasized by the Permanent Secretary for Women, Eseta Nadakuitavuki, during the launch of the Balance of Power – Promoting Empowerment and Resilience through Leadership (PEARL) Training 2025. This program is designed not merely as a training initiative but as a vital leadership pipeline in anticipation of the 2026 Municipal and National Elections, where the current representation of women in governance remains alarmingly low.
Nadakuitavuki underscored the significance of empowering female leaders for effective governance, inclusive development, and enhanced national resilience. She pointed out Fiji’s commitments under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to increase women’s participation and tackle challenges such as online and political violence that hinder their advancement.
She encouraged aspiring women leaders to step forward confidently, asserting, “You belong in these spaces. Your voice matters. And your nation needs your leadership.” The initiative also acknowledges the critical support of male allies and highlights the successes of women from the PEARL pipeline who have taken on roles as community leaders, district advisory councillors, and policy advocates, further promoting an inclusive environment for leadership.
This training underscores a hopeful outlook for the future of governance in Fiji as it aims to create a more balanced and equitable society where women’s voices are integral to decision-making processes. The commitment to overcoming barriers and promoting female leadership is a promising step toward achieving a more inclusive and democratic governance structure in the nation.
