Fiji’s peacekeepers stationed in the Golan Heights as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation are reported to be safe despite recent tensions in the area. Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has reassured the public that all Fijian troops are accounted for, and robust security measures are in place.

On December 8, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) conducted operations in the demilitarized zone aimed at countering rebel activity. While UN positions were not directly targeted during these operations, efforts are ongoing to retrieve equipment that was temporarily impacted by rebel infiltration. The IDF is bolstering security in the region, with local communities actively supporting peacekeepers to uphold stability.

Furthermore, it was noted that a Fijian officer returned safely to Camp Faour following an evacuation from Damascus. Although the operational environment remains tense, there is currently no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers. The Defence Ministry continues to closely monitor the situation and has praised the professionalism displayed by the troops in navigating these challenges.

In summary, Fiji’s peacekeepers are safe and well-supported amidst heightened regional tensions, showcasing their commitment to maintaining peace and stability. This resilience is vital for their mission, and ongoing efforts to ensure their safety and effectiveness highlight the importance of international cooperation in conflict areas.
