Fiji’s Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, has confirmed that Fijian soldiers serving in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are currently safe amidst the heightened tensions in the Middle East. In his address to Parliament, Tikoduadua noted that only one Fijian officer is stationed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), while additional personnel are part of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO).

He reassured members of Parliament that Fijian troops are well-prepared and secure, adhering strictly to established Standard Operating Procedures, and have robust evacuation plans in place. The Minister emphasized that the safety and welfare of peacekeepers are of utmost importance to the Coalition Government, with regular updates being received from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces headquarters.

Furthermore, Tikoduadua stated that a taskforce commander located at Blackrock is overseeing the peacekeeping troops deployed in the Middle East and worldwide. The government is also engaged in ongoing discussions with the United Arab Emirates regarding the temporary deployment of Fijian troops and equipment to boost operational readiness.

Looking ahead, Tikoduadua mentioned that a government delegation intends to visit the Middle East early next year to evaluate the situation and express appreciation for the support extended to Fijian peacekeepers. He also discussed the possibility of sending seven out of fourteen Bushmaster vehicles to the UNDOF area, although this is complicated by restrictions imposed by both Syrian and Israeli authorities on the number of vehicles that can be brought into the designated region.

This proactive approach by the Fijian government highlights its commitment to the safety of its peacekeepers while also navigating the complexities of international military cooperation. It’s an assurance not just for the families of these soldiers but for the broader community, showcasing the importance and dedication to global peacekeeping efforts. The planned assessments and potential reinforcements illustrate a readiness to adapt to evolving situations, reassuring the public of their peacekeepers’ ongoing safety and effectiveness.
