Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, recently addressed the various challenges confronting Fiji, emphasizing the government’s commitment to resolving them. Speaking in Parliament, he asserted that a significant legislative agenda is being pursued this year, which includes proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution and the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
Kamikamica stressed that addressing issues stemming from Fiji’s historical events since 1987, through the TRC and constitutional amendments, is crucial for securing lasting peace in the nation. He voiced his aspiration for collaboration with all sectors of society, expressing hope that the People’s Coalition would assist in developing a Constitution that adequately reflects the desires of the populace.
In a call for transformational leadership, he reiterated the words of President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, urging a leadership style centered on compassion, equity, and inclusivity—one that prioritizes the country and its people above partisan interests. Kamikamica’s vision is a Fiji where all citizens, regardless of their background, can thrive together without anyone being left behind.
This initiative comes in the context of a recent discussion where Kamikamica highlighted the imperative of reviewing the current Constitution to enhance democracy and ensure citizens’ rights are firmly established. His previous remarks at the launch of the National Development Plan underlined the need for tangible actions to back up promises of freedom and trust-building within the community. He emphasized that stabilizing public finances and enhancing citizens’ access to essential services remain top priorities for the Coalition Government.
As Fiji stands at a crossroads in its journey towards unity and stability, Kamikamica’s optimistic outlook and commitment to inclusive governance may pave the way for progress and reconciliation within the nation.
In a broader context, with growing public scrutiny and the challenges of governance ahead, it is essential for the government to engage all stakeholders collaboratively to foster a future marked by trust, accountability, and shared prosperity.
