Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has emphasized the importance of racial harmony in Fiji, asserting that it must remain a critical and continuous focus for every government. In his latest remarks, he highlighted the necessity of fostering cross-cultural understanding, which he deems a vital and noble endeavor for national unity.

Responding to a letter regarding race relations and historical political decisions affecting Indo-Fijians, Mr. Rabuka described the promotion of cultural inclusivity as an ongoing agenda essential for the well-being of Fijian society. He stated that the process of encouraging cross-cultural dialogue should permeate all facets of community life—from educational institutions to leadership circles—citing his own experiences during the restructuring of policies aimed at enhancing representation for minority groups.

The Prime Minister recalled past efforts, such as the creation of the Indian Alliance wing under the Alliance Government, aimed at increasing cultural participation. He also referred to his “let love shine” campaign from 2022, which advocated for unity and kindness among neighbors, emphasizing that acceptance of diversity is integral to Fiji’s national identity.

These sentiments resonate deeply with a previous call by Attorney-General Graham Leung, who highlighted the necessity of standing against racism and fostering unity amid rising tensions on social media. Both leaders underscore the vital need for Fijians to see each other first as citizens of Fiji, rather than through the lens of ethnic divisions.

The continuous commitment to promoting inclusivity remains foundational, with efforts from various sectors—including the establishment of the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and ongoing government initiatives that facilitate dialogue across different communities. This framework aims to renew social bonds and address historical grievances.

There is a hopeful outlook for Fiji as leaders from all walks of life come together, advocating for a nation where differences are not just tolerated but celebrated. The concerted efforts toward unity herald a promising future where all Fijians can thrive, embodying the diverse cultural heritage that makes the nation unique.
