Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the 320 civil servants who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the “No Jab, No Job” policy will be allowed to reapply for positions within the government. Speaking in Parliament, Rabuka clarified that this decision is part of a legislative reform aimed at addressing the concerns of those affected by the previously implemented policy.
The Prime Minister expressed empathy for the families impacted by job losses, stating, “Three hundred and twenty families were affected when the policy was implemented.” The new Health and Safety at Work (General Workplace Conditions) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 facilitates these former employees’ reapplications, allowing them to return to their roles and support their families.
Rabuka noted the adverse effects that the loss of skilled personnel has had on governmental operations, resulting in significant personnel turnover and creating gaps within civil service structures. He emphasized a need to address the exodus of qualified civil servants to foreign opportunities, particularly in countries like Australia and New Zealand, saying that Fijian civil servants often receive recognition at international forums.
Additionally, addressing the prevalent concerns about job security among civil servants, Rabuka expressed his commitment to fostering a collaborative working environment between the political government, civil servants, and their supervisors. “Hopefully, we can resolve that with a better working relationship,” he remarked, aiming to promote stability within the civil service.
This move to allow reapplications for previously terminated civil servants not only provides hope for those seeking to return to work but also signifies a shift towards more inclusive and supportive policies within the Fijian government, demonstrating an understanding of the importance of job security and skilled personnel in building a robust public service.
A positive outlook emerges from these developments, as Rabuka’s administration continues to work towards rebuilding trust, transparency, and accountability in governance, which are crucial elements in enhancing the performance of Fiji’s public service framework.
