There has been a significant update regarding the establishment of a drug rehabilitation center in Fiji, primarily driven by an international NGO’s initiative. The Ministry of Health is currently considering a partnership proposal from Drug-Free World International, as highlighted by Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Penioni Ravunawa. Plans are set to be presented in the Cabinet next week, with hopes to kickstart the project soon.

Jessica Brown, an ambassador for Drug-Free World International, outlined the benefits of their Narconon Program, which she claims effectively detoxifies individuals from drug residues and provides comprehensive rehabilitation. Brown emphasized Fiji’s natural beauty, suggesting that this initiative could enhance the lives of those struggling with addiction. She expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Fijian government to implement this program successfully.

Kerry Crutchfield, another ambassador for the organization, added that the Narconon Program not only addresses the immediate drug issues but also supports families in understanding and managing addiction within their households. This program has been successful globally and focuses on medical examinations and tailored withdrawal treatments to ensure safe recovery processes.

Reverend Simione Tugi, CEO of the Drug Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (Fiji), also supported the initiative, noting that the program has operated successfully worldwide for over 50 years, boasting a 93 percent success rate. He affirmed the program’s established effectiveness, emphasizing its role in aiding the government’s fight against drug abuse in Fiji.

The initiative reflects a growing urgency within Fiji to address drug addiction comprehensively, a concern recognized by recent government actions, including the introduction of tax incentives to encourage private investment in rehabilitation efforts. Collaborative initiatives involving NGOs, local governments, and community organizations are seen as essential to combat the rising drug problem and provide a compassionate, organized approach to recovery.

This cooperative effort signifies a strong commitment to improving the lives of individuals affected by substance abuse, paving the way for healthier communities and providing hope for positive change in Fiji’s approach to drug rehabilitation.
