The Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, has created a steering committee comprising various governmental and non-governmental organizations to develop a National Population Policy. Recently, a two-day consultation took place in Suva, where key stakeholders discussed critical national issues.
During these discussions, participants focused on topics that include infrastructure in maritime areas, market accessibility, rural development, youth empowerment, educational access, employment opportunities, healthcare improvements, and environmental challenges. The engaging conversation encompassed diverse socio-economic, environmental, and population-related factors.
Kemueli Naiqama, the CEO of FBoS, noted that the next steps involve creating a comprehensive policy that integrates these issues, which will ultimately be presented to Parliament. He emphasized the importance of this consultation for enhancing the quality of life and community well-being in Fiji.
Once the National Population Policy is approved by Parliament, the government will prioritize areas needing intervention and ensure proper budget allocations, according to Naiqama. Shiri Gounder, the permanent secretary of Finance, reinforced the government’s commitment to a consultative and inclusive style of policy-making, emphasizing the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration to develop a comprehensive policy that reflects the needs and aspirations of the Fijian people.
Gounder added that addressing population dynamics is crucial for the nation’s economic growth, health, education, and environmental sustainability. He hopes that this collaborative momentum will carry forward into the next stages of drafting and refining the policy.
