The Ministry of Immigration in Fiji has recently placed an order for 100,000 new passports, anticipating delivery in two batches scheduled for May and June. Minister Viliame Naupoto acknowledged that the order should have been made earlier, but he remains hopeful that this additional supply will help alleviate the significant shortages currently affecting citizens.
Frustration has been mounting among Fijians due to persistent delays in passport issuance, primarily caused by a combination of stock shortages and increased demand. Since February 25, the immigration department has limited passport applications to urgent travel reasons only, such as medical emergencies, employment opportunities, and education, leaving many citizens in a difficult situation. Appointment slots have filled up quickly on the online portal, leaving no availability for new bookings for an indefinite period.
Many citizens have voiced their dissatisfaction with these service disruptions. A mother expressed her challenges as her passport processing is still underway while she has already received her children’s passports, forcing her to postpone crucial travel. Another person faced disappointment when he learned that his wife’s passport, originally expected within 15 working days, has been delayed until July or August.
Despite the difficulties many have encountered, some individuals have successfully maneuvered through the process. One woman was able to secure passports for her family just in time for an international move to Melbourne, highlighting inconsistencies in processing times that have left others who applied much earlier still waiting.
Additionally, concerns have been raised about the overall efficiency of the Immigration Department. An immigration lawyer noted internal issues contributing to the delays and emphasized the importance of improved planning and communication to enhance future operations. Such logistical challenges reveal the critical need for a well-functioning immigration process, particularly as demand for passports continues to rise.
The recent order for new passports represents a positive step forward in addressing the ongoing issues within the immigration system.
