The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has launched an off-season athletics training camp to give young athletes, especially from smaller schools, a chance to hone their skills during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou emphasized the necessity of structured training for these students, many of whom exhibit significant talent but often lack the opportunity for adequate off-season preparation. This initiative is designed to address concerns about injuries and performance issues resulting from unfit conditions observed during competitions.

The camp, which was proposed by Tafao’ou and approved by FSC management, commenced weeks before Christmas and is set to conclude on January 24. It currently charges a minimal fee of $20 per week and has welcomed approximately 35 participants in its initial weeks. The program includes training on foundational sports skills such as block starts and endurance, aiming to provide a comprehensive six-week training structure to participants.

In addition to Tafao’ou, the camp is enriched by the expertise of experienced former athletes like Albert Miler and Banuve Tabakaucoro, who guide attendees in specialized areas including high jumps and sprints. Tafao’ou noted that the camp has not only improved physical fitness but also instilled vital life skills such as discipline and time management, leading to positive changes in student routines that parents have observed.

Encouragingly, many participants who previously hesitated to compete against established peers are now enthusiastic about upcoming inter-house competitions, which are set to take place in February. Tafao’ou aims to level the playing field by providing quality coaching to all students, regardless of their school’s resources. He invites additional young athletes to join the camp while there is still time, reinforcing the program’s goal to inspire and prepare a new generation of talents for future competitions.

In summary, the FSC off-season athletics training camp stands as a beacon of hope for young athletes in Fiji. By focusing on skill development, discipline, and inclusivity, this initiative not only seeks to elevate the participants’ athletic capabilities but also fosters a supportive community that could lead to long-term success in the sport. As these aspiring athletes engage in training, the potential for their growth on both national and international stages becomes increasingly promising.
