Fiji is actively pursuing its ambition to establish a team in the National Rugby League (NRL), as confirmed by Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports. The government is doing everything possible to support the company leading the proposal for the NRL bid. Saukuru stated that the NRL bid is still progressing and emphasized the government’s commitment to backing rugby league, including securing support letters from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Interestingly, in contrast to Papua New Guinea, Fiji has yet to request financial assistance from Australia for this endeavor. Recently, Papua New Guinea received approval for an NRL team to start in 2028, after a meeting between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Papua New Guinean counterpart James Marape in Sydney.

In a separate matter, Saukuru mentioned that there has not yet been an update linked to the commission of inquiry investigating the circumstances around Ubayd Haider’s death. The last information he received indicated that interviews with six individuals overseas, including promoter Freddy Chand, were pending. An update from the inquiry chairperson, Edwin Wainiqolo, is anticipated this week.

This commitment from the Fijian government highlights the growing recognition of rugby league’s importance in the region and showcases a dedication to promoting sports development. It is a hopeful sign for rugby fans in Fiji as they aim to compete on a larger stage in the NRL, potentially further strengthening their sports culture.

Overall, while challenges remain, there is optimism for Fiji’s entry into the NRL, which could have a positive impact on the nation’s sports landscape and provide opportunities for local talent to shine on an international platform.
