A new skills training initiative has been launched to help boost employability for 200 Fijians by providing them with valuable training opportunities. The Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) has partnered with Fiji’s National Employment Centre to implement the Employment Skills Training (EST) program. This initiative focuses on practical, hands-on skills that are in high demand in various industries.
APTC Country Director for Fiji and Tuvalu, Gareth McGrath, highlighted that the two-week training program includes non-accredited short courses in essential areas such as plumbing, welding, wall and floor tiling, infection control, effective communication, and microcredentials. By addressing the existing skills gap, the program aims to prepare participants for immediate employment opportunities.
The initial cohort of nearly 50 participants from the central division has already completed the training, showcasing the program’s positive impact. Jone Maritino Nemani, Permanent Secretary for Employment, commended the participants for their commitment to upskilling and expressed optimism about the contributions they will make in their communities.
Future training sessions are scheduled to take place in Levuka, as well as in the western and northern divisions of Fiji, which is an exciting development for those looking to enhance their skill sets and improve their employment prospects.
