Fiji’s Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua recently announced a significant shift in the nation’s approach to national security, moving away from a military-dominated focus to prioritizing community involvement, democratic values, and the well-being of citizens. In his remarks regarding the upcoming 2025-2026 national budget, Tikoduadua emphasized that modern security is not merely about military readiness but also about fostering strong communities and promoting peace.
He highlighted the importance of the forthcoming National Security Strategy and Defence Review, which will involve comprehensive consultations with various stakeholders, including villagers, youth, civil society, and traditional leaders. Tikoduadua articulated a vision for a “new democratic culture” in Fiji, emphasizing that democratic processes and the voices of the many should outweigh individual ambitions.
Additionally, Tikoduadua reaffirmed the commitment to civilian authority and recognized the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) for respecting constitutional governance. He also announced that plans are underway to facilitate direct recruitment of Fijians into the Australian Defence Force, which symbolizes the growing international collaboration in defense matters.
Key priorities in the national budget also include support for veterans’ welfare, peacekeeping operations, maritime security, and leadership training initiatives aimed at youth and community leaders. This comprehensive strategic approach presents a hopeful outlook for creating a more inclusive and secure environment for all Fijians.
The focus on rebuilding trust in the military and fostering national unity indicates a transformative era for Fiji, highlighting the commitment to enhance community resilience and stability in the face of contemporary challenges. Minister Tikoduadua’s inclusive vision reflects a hopeful path forward, aiming to collectively secure a brighter future for the nation and its citizens.
