Rural communities in the Northern Division are grappling with persistent development challenges, prompting urgent calls for reforms. The National Rural Development Policy consultation has been welcomed as an essential step towards addressing these long-standing issues.
Lead Consultant Mosese Sikivou emphasized that the new policy aims to place communities at the forefront, focusing on their needs and available resources. “We are developing a new policy and a new system for rural development. The system people are familiar with today could change significantly,” Sikivou stated.
Former MP and consultation participant Jale Sigarara highlighted the detrimental effects of outdated policies, asserting that meaningful change is overdue. “We constantly hear politicians talking about change, but for decades there has been no real change. For nearly 80 years, people in rural communities have suffered. Now the focus must be on the people and the community,” he remarked.
Adding to the discourse, Tui Macuata and former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere underscored that previous frameworks have failed to address the challenges faced by rural and outer island populations. “Rural development must respect the land and the sea, strengthen social cohesion, and create opportunities for young people to thrive without leaving their communities behind,” he stated.
Ratu Wiliame further asserted that development should be sustainable and culturally grounded. He expressed optimism that the policy has the potential to empower provinces, districts, and communities by improving services and fostering lasting partnerships.
The consultation, which includes discussions focusing on the districts of Cakaudrove, Bua, and Macuata, is expected to conclude tomorrow, marking a significant step towards revitalizing rural development in the region.
