Fijian musician and entrepreneur Akanisi Vakaloloma has expressed her enthusiasm for the recent launch of Fiji’s inaugural MSME Strategic Plan and MSME Database, which she believes will provide essential support to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Vakaloloma emphasized the significance of this initiative, describing it as a crucial move towards offering targeted assistance to businesses of varying sizes and industry sectors.

Reflecting on her own journey in the creative arts field, Vakaloloma shared that gaining access to quality equipment was one of her primary obstacles. Despite her skills and experience, the lack of professional tools hindered her ability to deliver top-notch sound, expand her services, and compete for larger events. “For many years, my biggest challenge was access to quality equipment. Without proper musical tools, it was difficult to deliver professional sound, expand my services, or compete for larger events,” she stated, highlighting the impact of limited resources on business growth.

The MSME Strategic Plan 2025–2030 acknowledges the diverse challenges that MSMEs face across different sectors and aims to provide specific solutions tailored to their needs. Vakaloloma echoed the sentiments of Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel, who pointed out that Fiji’s MSMEs have previously operated with minimal support and coordination. He underscored the importance of having a comprehensive database and a structured approach to fully realize the potential of these enterprises.

“Being visible matters for MSMEs like mine,” Vakaloloma added. “A strong and accurate database ensures that businesses are recognized, understood, and included in national policy formulation and support programs. With this, small businesses are no longer invisible; they are counted and connected to opportunities.”

Vakaloloma also expressed optimism about the positive impact of these initiatives on women and young entrepreneurs in Fiji, reinforcing the idea that with the appropriate support systems in place, Fijian MSMEs can thrive on local, regional, and global stages. This newfound visibility and support offer promising prospects for the growth and resilience of small businesses across the nation.
