To rebuild public trust in the Fiji Police Force and the justice system, the Fiji Police are joining forces with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. This partnership aims to enhance national safety while strengthening relationships between law enforcement and local communities, allowing citizens to feel more secure and supported.
Together, both forces are committed to deterring crime, improving response times, and fostering greater community interaction. Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe, Police Director of Operations, emphasized the need for a strong, visible presence within communities to help regain public confidence in law enforcement. He stated, “To win the hearts and minds of the people and restore their trust in the police, we seek assistance from them to help us increase our security presence on the ground.”
This collaboration also comes at a crucial time, as military support plays a vital role in the planned destruction of over four tonnes of methamphetamine confiscated during recent drug raids. Vusonilawe assured that this joint operation will effectively eradicate illegal substances, reinforcing both organizations’ commitment to public safety.
The partnership reflects ongoing discussions among leaders from both the police and military. Notably, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the RFMF, and Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu have been exploring initiatives addressing drug-related crimes and their roots in social issues. They acknowledge that Fiji’s drug challenges are often intertwined with socio-economic factors such as poverty, lack of education, and limited access to healthcare.
As Fiji adopts this collaborative strategy, it is hopeful that the focus will extend beyond immediate law enforcement actions, involving communities in developing sustainable measures to address drug abuse. Ongoing collaboration and community engagement are essential for fostering a safer and healthier environment for all citizens, underscoring a commitment to long-term solutions for these pressing issues.
