Fiji’s Rarawa Vulimainarita made history recently as he participated in his inaugural international netball tournament, a significant achievement that was further highlighted by his first-ever airplane journey. The 27-year-old center player was part of the Fiji men’s squad that delivered a stunning upset against Australia, winning 55-54 in the thrilling final of the Men’s Netball Nations Series held in Singapore.
Originating from Vulaga in Lau and raised in the village of Laselase in Sigatoka, Vulimainarita returned home to a hero’s welcome on Monday, celebrated by family and friends. Reflecting on his experience, he expressed gratitude and acknowledged the divine influence that helped him fulfill his dream of making the team, traveling abroad, and achieving this milestone victory for Netball Fiji.
Describing his first flight, Vulimainarita shared, “It was my first time in an airplane. I kept my head down the entire time it was about to take off. My teammates seated beside me couldn’t contain their laughter because they knew it was something that I’ve never experienced before.” He humorously recalled calling on God during the takeoff and landing, showcasing the blend of excitement and nervousness that comes with such new adventures.
Despite facing challenges leading up to the tournament, including limited training opportunities due to his work commitments at Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort, Vulimainarita persevered without giving up on his aspirations. He trained rigorously whenever he could, commuting to Suva on his days off to join his teammates.
This remarkable journey not only marks a significant personal achievement for Vulimainarita but also highlights the potential for growth and success within the sport in Fiji. His story serves as an inspiration to others who may face obstacles in pursuing their dreams, underscoring the importance of determination and resilience.
In summary, Rarawa Vulimainarita’s first international tournament and flight, combined with Fiji’s historic victory over Australia, underscore a moment of pride for both the athlete and his country, demonstrating that hard work and faith can lead to remarkable accomplishments.
