Navua Hospital in Fiji has begun a partial closure to facilitate essential maintenance, primarily focusing on rewiring and other critical upgrades necessary for patient safety. This closure, announced by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, will take place from May 1, 2025, until July 31, 2025.
To ensure that medical services continue during this period, tents have been erected in the hospital car park by the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team, providing a temporary space for patients requiring medical attention. Those who need to be admitted will be redirected to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.
The ongoing maintenance work is coordinated by Energy Fiji Ltd and the Public Works Department, reflecting a significant commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure. Previous assessments of Navua Hospital have identified structural weaknesses in various parts of the facility, underscoring the necessity for these upgrades. Similar issues are noted across Fiji’s healthcare system, with an estimated $4.6 billion needed nationwide to modernize healthcare facilities.
Improvement initiatives at Navua Hospital not only aim to address current needs but also demonstrate a broader effort to enhance healthcare service delivery in Fiji. This proactive approach, including the establishment of temporary facilities, is a hopeful sign that the challenges faced by healthcare services are being actively tackled.
The community’s support and involvement will play a critical role in fostering a resilient healthcare system, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure improvements for the well-being of all citizens in the region.
