Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is set to appoint a National Security Advisor, following Cabinet approval for the establishment of the Office of the National Security Assessments. This new office intends to fortify Fiji’s national security and defense infrastructure by providing continuous advice directly to the Prime Minister and government on issues affecting national security and integrity.
The creation of this office aims to enhance coordination among various national security agencies, which have historically operated independently. Currently, both the Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force maintain their intelligence units that contribute daily reports to the Prime Minister. The establishment of a centralized Office of National Security Assessments is expected to improve situational awareness and response capabilities across the security landscape.
This initiative aligns with previous recommendations, notably from the National Security and Defence Review Report, which underscored the necessity of having a structured national security framework capable of facing contemporary challenges. The overall goal is to create a more robust and proactive national security system.
As Fiji moves forward with these strategic steps, the emphasis on greater collaboration amongst security entities reflects the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens while striving for national integrity. This progress indicates a hopeful future for Fiji’s overall national security strategy and its ability to respond effectively to both domestic and international challenges.
