National Library Week 2025 has officially commenced at Bureta District School in Ovalau, highlighting the theme “Libraries for Sustainable Communities.” The event underscores the evolving role of libraries as essential spaces for fostering knowledge, creativity, and innovation, beyond just being repositories for books.
The Minister for Education delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the significance of libraries as hubs of learning and creativity. He encouraged schools to engage students in activities like poster displays, poetry recitals, book parades, quizzes, and writing competitions throughout the week to cultivate a robust reading culture.
A shared responsibility in sustaining libraries was highlighted, where teachers, parents, and school leaders are urged to integrate library usage in their routine, promote reading at home, and prioritize library resources. The government has shown its commitment by investing over $72,000 in the 2024–2025 period to equip 114 schools, including early childhood education centers, primary, and secondary institutions, particularly in remote and maritime regions.
Additionally, training programs for teachers and librarians are supported to ensure the relevancy and effective management of these spaces. The Minister remarked on the vital role of libraries in nurturing a knowledgeable and wise community, urging all to embrace libraries and reading as keys to a sustainable and prosperous Fiji.
This launch aligns with previous efforts seen in prior similar events where robust engagement in library-related activities was encouraged to reignite the cultural significance of libraries. Such initiatives reflect a sustained commitment to reviving and enhancing literacy skills across the nation, resonating with global themes of inclusivity and access to education and information.
As National Library Week unfolds, it’s a poignant reminder of libraries’ critical role in fostering educational growth and cultural understanding, paving the way for a brighter and more informed future for Fiji.
