The Ministry of Finance has kicked off its inaugural national budget public consultation, seeking feedback from citizens and organizations regarding their hopes for the upcoming budget. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad highlighted this initiative during a session at Rishikul Sanatan College, where he stressed the importance of including diverse voices from various sectors, including community representatives, businesses, and organizations.

This consultation differs from past efforts by being more structured and aligned with the National Development Plan, aiming to directly address specific issues rather than relying on general attendance. “We will be inviting representatives from different sectors, like farmers, to ensure that everyone has a voice,” Prasad noted, indicating a more focused approach to gathering input.

The upcoming national budget is expected to prioritize infrastructure improvements, healthcare, education, and support for vulnerable groups within society. Prasad emphasized that the implementation of these plans will be closely monitored across different ministries to ensure funds are used efficiently.

In line with previous consultations, this initiative aims to foster transparency and public involvement, enhancing trust in government processes. The second phase of public consultations is scheduled to occur later tonight at the University of the South, encouraging further community participation.

These steps reflect a hopeful commitment to an inclusive national dialogue, empowering Fijians to contribute actively to shaping their country’s economic policies and ensuring that their needs are addressed in the budget-making process. Through this engagement, the government seeks to build a more resilient and equitable economy for all citizens.
