Significant progress is being made in the ‘Na Vualiku’ Fiji Tourism Development Programme, which aims to transform Vanua Levu into a bustling tourism center. The initiative sets the groundwork for sustainable growth in the northern regions of Fiji, with an Integrated Tourism Master Plan scheduled to kick off next month.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka has outlined key developments under this program, which will identify priority areas for tourism growth, provide funding strategies, and include vital environmental and social safeguards. A proposal involving collaboration with the National Trust, local communities, and the private sector for a new visitor center and business plans is expected to be presented this month.
Moreover, a contract will be awarded for designing and supervising the construction of important infrastructure, such as pavements, fencing, and a new terminal at Savusavu. Improvements are also planned for Labasa and Savusavu airports, where procurement of remote travel and automatic flight information systems is underway. Notably, plans for a feasibility study concerning a new airport in Vanua Levu and improved air connectivity for Taveuni and other northern airports are part of the initiative.
In a move to support local enterprise, the program will introduce a pilot initiative in October aimed at bolstering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) owned by women and communities within the tourism sector. This aligns with a broader strategy to ensure that the community benefits directly from the growth of tourism.
Additionally, the launch of an updated International Visitor Survey will enhance data collection and visitor feedback for both businesses and governmental entities. This conscientious effort reflects a commitment to fostering sustainable tourism that not only increases visitor numbers but also improves the lives of residents in Vanua Levu.
There is a palpable optimism surrounding the Na Vualiku project, as observed by Gavoka during his visits to Labasa and Savusavu, where signs of economic growth are evident. With the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, this project could significantly uplift the local economy and enhance sustainability, paving the way for a brighter future for the communities involved.
The unity among government bodies, civil society, and the private sector is key to ensuring the success of this ambitious initiative, which promises to create lasting positive change in the northern tourism industry.
