The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has called for an evaluation of its compensation, benefits, and career advancement structures as essential measures to retain skilled officers. This concern was brought to light during parliamentary discussions surrounding the RFMF’s annual reports covering the years 2019 to 2022.

Lenora Qereqeretabua, the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, emphasized the necessity of developing a structured approach to reward officers who have pursued further education. She additionally highlighted the need to reassess veterans’ benefits through the Ministry of Defense, aiming to enhance support for those who have served.

Moreover, Qereqeretabua stressed the importance of expanding public relations initiatives and cadet training programs. These endeavors are designed to improve community engagement and instill values such as integrity and service among the youth. She expressed that implementing these recommendations will bolster the RFMF’s operational effectiveness and strengthen its commitment to democratic principles and transparency.

Minister for Immigration Viliame Naupoto echoed this sentiment, suggesting a collaborative review of the cadet training program with the Ministry of Education. He pointed out that the current syllabus dates back to the time of the Prime Minister’s own cadet training, indicating a need for modernization. He called for specialized programs for boarding and day schools to ensure a more relevant and effective training experience.

This focus on reform and improvement reflects a broader commitment within the RFMF to adapt and grow, addressing past challenges and ensuring that its personnel are equipped and motivated to serve effectively. The initiative to refine compensation and educational rewards signifies a hopeful advancement toward building a more sustainable military force that values its members.

In a landscape of change, the RFMF’s commitment to engaging with both current and potential recruits showcases a proactive approach to meet the evolving needs of Fiji. Cognizant of its past, the military is positioning itself to foster a more inclusive and responsive community, paving the way for a brighter future.
