The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has embarked on a significant initiative with the launch of the Veiliutaki Framework Lead Self Course on February 24, 2025, at the Centre for Training and Development in Nasese. This program, inaugurated by Lieutenant Colonel Pio Varawa, the Chief Staff Officer for Service Support, aims to bolster leadership skills within the military and the broader community.
During his opening remarks, Lt Col Varawa emphasized that leadership is not defined by titles or ranks, but rather by the ability to inspire and guide others. He highlighted that the five-day course is centered on fostering strategic self-awareness, which involves understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses. He noted, “Only through this self-understanding can you effectively manage and lead others,” underscoring the importance of personal growth in effective leadership.
The course boasts over twenty participants from the RFMF, as well as civilian members from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs. Lt Col Varawa encouraged all attendees to pursue continuous personal development even beyond the course, reinforcing the idea that effective leadership begins with self-leadership.
Supported by the New Zealand Defence Force, the course aims to significantly enhance leadership skills among participants. The focus on self-awareness and personal growth is not only vital for individual development but also for cultivating adaptive leaders capable of addressing complex challenges.
This initiative echoes previous discussions led by figures such as Commodore Humphrey Tawake, who has highlighted the importance of strategic vision and effective communication as essential elements of modern military leadership. The RFMF’s dedication to fostering a culture of leadership development is a proactive step in building a resilient and accountable military force, prepared to meet the demands of today’s strategic environment.
The Veiliutaki Framework Lead Self Course exemplifies a hopeful investment in the future of military leadership in Fiji, reflecting a commitment to nurturing capable leaders who can inspire and guide their teams with efficacy.
