Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua has asserted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) must transition away from a history of political involvement and instead reestablish itself as a key pillar of national security and democracy. Speaking in Parliament, Tikoduadua reflected on the troubling engagement of the military in Fiji’s political affairs during notable coups in 1987, 2000, and 2006, stating that these events tarnished the military’s image as a defender of democracy.
Acknowledging the historical context, Tikoduadua emphasized the necessity of confronting past mistakes for the sake of national healing and progress. “We cannot heal if we do not acknowledge the past. We cannot move forward if we allow history to repeat itself,” he noted. His vision for the future of the RFMF is rooted in redefining its role not as a power broker but as a servant of the people, committed to safeguarding the rights and security of every Fijian citizen.
Tikoduadua pledged that under his leadership, the RFMF will prioritize stability over political control and behave in accordance with democratic principles.
