The Fiji Police Force has made a significant advancement in combating maritime crime with the recent donation of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) by the Government of Japan and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This cutting-edge underwater robotic tool will enable officers to assess potentially dangerous maritime scenarios with enhanced safety and efficiency.
The ROV’s high-resolution technology can identify hidden threats, including modifications on vessel hulls that may be exploited by transnational crime groups. This is a crucial step in modernizing Fiji’s maritime law enforcement capabilities.
During the handover ceremony, Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting Fiji in its policing efforts, emphasizing the importance of collective action against maritime crime. He highlighted that additional support would continue through the UNODC to strengthen Fiji’s law enforcement infrastructure.
Fiji Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu expressed gratitude for the support received from Japan, noting that the ROV is part of a broader initiative to integrate technological advancements into crime-fighting strategies. This initiative is in line with UNODC’s goals to equip law enforcement agencies globally with modern tools to improve their operational capacity.
A significant feature of the development includes the completion of a two-day ROV training program for 13 police officers, also funded by Japan. This training will ensure that the police can utilize the new technology effectively in their operations.
Ambassador Michii also announced continued support for improving the Fiji Police WATERPOL base in Draunibota in Lami, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing maritime security within the region. This partnership illustrates the dedication to fostering robust law enforcement capabilities to safeguard Fiji’s maritime zones.
