The Chief Executive of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), Joweli Cawaki, has underscored the vital contribution of enforcement officers in safeguarding Fiji’s maritime environment. Speaking during the In-house Regulators Training, he reinforced their responsibilities under the Maritime Transport Act 2013, which empowers MSAF to regulate and enforce adherence to national maritime laws.
Cawaki pointed out the importance of issuing marine infringement notices, revealing that since this initiative resumed in June 2024, MSAF has already distributed 132 notices this year. He emphasized that effectively utilizing MSAF’s authority necessitates skillful observation and thorough documentation of violations.
The two-day training session encompasses 14 MSAF participants, focusing on enhancing their abilities to effectively enforce maritime regulations. With the aim of improving training, MSAF is dedicated to increasing compliance and bolstering maritime safety throughout Fiji.
This initiative is particularly timely as the festive season coincides with the cyclone season, marking an important period for both public safety and compliance. MSAF encourages the community to remain vigilant and report any unsafe practices, reinforcing their commitment to ensuring that both local residents and visiting mariners adhere to safety standards.
With MSAF’s proactive training and enforcement strategies, there is potential for a safer maritime environment. This commitment allows families and travelers to enjoy their maritime experiences during the holiday season with greater assurance and peace of mind. The organization aims to instill a sense of responsibility in the maritime community, fostering a culture of safety that is crucial during this period of increased maritime activity.
