The Ministry of Fisheries recently conducted its inaugural formal consultation with Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Levuka, Ratu Etonia Seru Rokotuinaceva, at the Provincial Administration Boardroom. This meeting signifies a pivotal move towards enhancing cooperation with traditional leaders on marine development initiatives.

The consultation was organized by a delegation from Suva, led by the Acting Director of Fisheries and senior officials, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Lands. Notable attendees included the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the iTaukei Affairs Board and senior government officials from Lomaiviti.

Key topics of discussion revolved around proposed infrastructure upgrades at the Makogai Mariculture Research Centre, which aims to promote sustainable mariculture development in collaboration with the Government of South Korea. The dialogue also touched on the Wakaya Gazetted Marine Reserve, highlighting the need for inclusive participation and deeper engagement with all stakeholders, particularly the resource custodians of the Vanua o Levuka. This aligns with Fiji’s broader Blue Economy strategy.

Ratu Etonia expressed his appreciation for the government’s proposed initiatives, acknowledging their potential long-term advantages for the people of Fiji. He emphasized the necessity for regular and meaningful consultations with the Vanua and resource custodians, reinforcing that inclusivity must be central to national development planning.

During the consultation, a matanigasau was formally presented to Ratu Etonia, illustrating the respect and significance of this engagement. He praised the progress at Makogai and recognized the ongoing efforts of officials in advancing national development goals for the benefit of all Fijians. This collaboration between traditional and governmental authorities hints at a promising future for sustainable marine development in Fiji.
