A key figure in Fiji’s largest drug bust, Aporosa Davelevu, was captured on CCTV leaving a service station shortly after a truck carrying over four tonnes of methamphetamine arrived. This footage is a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing trial at the Lautoka High Court. The state witness who identified him did so based on both his appearance and prior interactions from a 2019 drug investigation.
Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, presented the evidence of Davelevu being spotted around the same time police executed an arrest at his home. The footage serves to further link him to this significant narcotics case.
As the trial progresses, three immunity witnesses have provided detailed testimony regarding the logistics of the drug operation. One witness, who was previously in a relationship with accused Sakiusa Tuva, reported having repeatedly visited a property in Voivoi where drugs were stored. She claimed to have seen other accused individuals, including Cathy Tuirabe, actively involved in packaging the illegal substances.
Another immunity witness, the owner of the Voivoi house, testified about how he allowed Tuva to utilize the rental money to finish construction on the property. He described the alarming moment when a container fell and revealed white crystals, confirming his suspicions about its contents.
Meanwhile, a third witness conveyed that he transported drugs from Legalega to Denarau and witnessed others involved, including Tuirabe, being careful to conceal the contents of the containers. However, during cross-examinations, defense attorneys have attempted to challenge the credibility of these testimonies.
The case, which marks one of the most considerable methamphetamine seizures in Fiji, highlights the judiciary’s rigorous efforts to tackle drug trafficking. This approach demonstrates a commitment to accountability and public safety.
