Loraini Senivutu from Nakasaleka, Kadavu, made her memorable debut at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in London by scoring her first international try. At just 22, the loosehead prop powered over the line to secure Vodafone Fijiana’s opening score in their match against Scotland. Despite the team’s eventual 29-15 defeat, Senivutu’s performance remained a highlight.

Reflecting on the moment, Senivutu expressed her elation: “Scoring that try was overwhelmingly emotional. It was more than personal achievement; it marked a collective team effort.”

The match saw Scotland quickly take the lead with Francesca McGhie’s early try, followed by further scores from Emma Orr and McGhie. Though Fiji faced early disruptions from injuries and cards, they found a glimmer of hope with Senivutu capitalizing on a promising attack initiated by Nunia Daunimoala.

Fiji started the second half with promise, as No.8 Manuqalo Komaitai added another try for the team. However, McGhie’s hat-trick and subsequent events, including Bitila Tawake’s upgraded red card for a dangerous tackle, allowed Scotland to extend their advantage. A late try from Karalaini Naisewa provided a final spark for Fiji, but Scotland’s defense held firm.

The defeat underscores the challenges faced by Fiji as they strive to enhance their discipline and strategic execution against top-tier teams. Yet, the game also revealed moments of Fiji’s potential and capability to challenge formidable opponents, hinting at a bright future in international rugby. Through continued growth, the Fijiana team aims to translate these lessons into successes on the world stage, promising excitement for fans and newfound inspiration for women’s rugby in Fiji and the Pacific.
