The Fiji Kids Learning for Life program is celebrating its 16th year of operation, reaffirming its dedication to guiding disadvantaged students in the Nadroga region throughout their educational journeys. Founder Julie Hoskisen highlighted the organization’s unique approach, which supports over 80 families by covering full educational expenses from Class One to Year 13.
“Our name, Learning for Life, reflects our commitment,” Hoskisen stated. “If a child joins us in Class One, we remain their sponsor until they complete Year 13. We accompany them throughout their school life and motivate them to continue their education.”
Since its launch, the program has positively impacted more than 250 children, many of whom have advanced to higher education institutions like Fiji National University and the University of the South Pacific, acquiring vital skills for future employment. A cornerstone of the program’s enduring success is its focus on reintegrating its graduates into the community as leaders.
The initiative currently features about 30 active mentors and 40 alumni who have benefited from vocational and university scholarships. Hoskisen noted that these graduates increasingly return to support the next generation of students.
“We encourage them to reflect on their journey and how they can motivate younger students to stay in school and strive for a brighter future,” she explained. “Their achievements inspire the youth to aspire for something greater, breaking free from challenging circumstances.”
Through its efforts, the program aims to uplift those in the broader community who seek inspiration and financial support, working to disrupt the cycle of poverty that affects many families. This initiative not only empowers individual students but also fosters a sense of community and hope for a better future.
