Pravesh Sharma, chairperson of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC), has emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of the Grace Road Group (GRG). In a recent interview, he raised concerns about the treatment of GRG by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, questioning whether local employers would face the same scrutiny.

The ministry has announced that it found “breaches” in Grace Road’s operations, and officers will be dispatched to their properties for investigation. However, Mr. Sharma argues that the ministry’s approach appears flawed. He pointed out that before making such allegations public, the ministry should have first given Grace Road the chance to explain and rectify any potential issues.

He stated, “It seems that the ministry has come out quite strongly to say that there are breaches being carried out by the Grace Road Group of Companies, without giving them the opportunity to address these claims first.” Sharma also highlighted that the approach raises questions about whether other local companies are being treated equally, particularly in light of the issues faced by migrant workers.

Grace Road claims to employ 800 people in Fiji and has expressed its willingness to cooperate with the ministry to address any public concerns.

This situation underscores the need for a fair and transparent process when addressing workplace issues, and it could promote a more equitable treatment of all employers. As Grace Road seeks to resolve these challenges, it will also serve as an important case that could lead to a broader discussion on the responsibilities and rights of employers within Fiji’s labor market.

Summary: The FHRADC chairperson criticized the Ministry of Employment’s handling of breaches reported against the Grace Road Group, suggesting that the ministry should have given the company a chance to respond before going public. With Grace Road employing 800 workers and willing to cooperate, this situation may encourage a more balanced labor relations process in Fiji.
